Kine A week told you “The brand new robust ‘crooks slide out’ is actually peopled which have a colorful variety off essential and you can arresting emails, and they, skilfully controlled of the publisher and you may director, enable the movie in order to tread h2o effortlessly. It is only to the finish which starts to fall apart, however the slap-right up finale rescues they regarding ‘red’. Wonderfully staged and you can smartly dialogued, it’ll have zero higher issue inside the way of life off the incredibly unsightly term.” [ 8 ]
Month-to-month Motion picture Bulletin said “The film moves in the a fast pace, the latest conversation is smooth and you may characterisations generally active. Dick Powell and you will Evelyn Keyes head brand new cast professionally, just like the detective is actually played with big aplomb by the that individual character, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody regarding the Brand new Yorker indexed “It terse and you will tight motion picture noir is actually according to the latest close and you can top-notch disputes of one’s term profile, the fresh criminal genius (played from the Penis Powell) at the rear of a chic unlawful gambling establishment. The fresh film’s publisher and you may director, Robert Rossen, creates a multidimensional chess game, to own mortal stakes, ranging from Johnny, his boss (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and a good scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whoever aunt (Nina Foch) worked on gambling enterprise and you will old a great corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The caustically epigrammatic script, the fresh cast’s suavely controlled body language out of like and you may menace, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly controlled and you will fashionably cocky photographs (including their governmental conscience) get this pugnacious yet , outlined spectacle a low profile antique of style.” [ 10 ]
Variety provided the film kudos, composing, “This can be a smart whodunit, having awareness of scripting, casting and you can camerawork training they over the mediocre. Image have activity and you can suspense, and you will certain quick suits away from jokes to incorporate style. Ace performances from the Penis Powell, since the a gaming household overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, as an authorities inspector, also within the score . While the spot observe a familiar pattern, new characterizations is actually fresh and also the shows suitable in order to overbalance. Dialog are terse and you may relevant, steering clear of the psychological, phoney touching. Uncommon cam basics show up occasionally so you can escalate focus and you may temporarily arrest the interest. Good teamplay because of the Robert Rossen, doubling because the manager-scripter, and you will Milton Holmes, fresh journalist and you will representative manufacturer, plus supports making it a smooth creation.” [ 11 ]

Its mostly an issue of enjoying Mr. Powell go through their paces smartly when you find yourself a large throw from stars and you can actresses promote him traditional help. Evelyn Keyes takes on the great nothing lady who brings out the new finest in him and you can Ellen Received ‘s the smooth and slinky vixen which will get him with the jams. Thomas Gomez is actually fatty once the villain and Lee J. Cobb do an alternative ready journey as the a tired police inspector which fundamentally shuts your situation. A great amount of ingesting and puffing is completed from the all alarmed.” [ 12 ]
Philp French, writing regarding the Observer told you: “Which scarcely shown movie noir ‘s the cool, controlled directorial first of one’s leftover-side creator which proceeded and then make such classics since Most of the the latest King’s Guys and the Hustler .” [ thirteen ]
